A range of opportunities for you to take part in making music

Doncaster offers a fantastic range of instrumental music groups for children and young people at all levels. There are so many to choose from:

A brilliant range of ensembles and bands through Doncaster Music Service, including wind bands, string ensembles, guitar and ukulele ensembles, full orchestras, brass groups and music theory sessions- find out more information and how to join here

Become part of the internationally acclaimed Doncaster Youth Jazz Association – with opportunities to join graded ensembles- The Youth Stageband, Youth Swing Orchestra, Youth Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Orchestra – find out more information and how to join here 

Amped Up Music Academy is Doncaster’s No1 independent music school. Both adults and children (ages 6 and up) are welcome for one to one lessons on instruments such as the guitar, drums, piano, bass, keyboards, and for singing tuition too. Over 300 students visit the academy each week, so if you’re interested in learning an instrument, why not become part of the Amped Up community and get started on the path to becoming a rock star? If you love to sing, there are choirs and groups who offer a wide range of experiences- from classical to jazz, folk to hip hop and pop:​
Swag at The Point – Perfect for any budding superstars! This energetic group performs chart hits with choreography-Swag is a positive and passionate group of young people who combine vocals and choreography to create their own take on a wide variety of different music. Over the past few years genres covered have included; Pop, Hip Hop, Drum n Bass, R n B, Rap and even classical! Not like any choir you’ve ever seen before, this is group is more like an enormous pop band than a choral group – more information here

Have a go at writing your own music with First Verse – weekly music workshops for young people aged 10 – 16. You don’t need any experience of song-writing or making music, just a passion and interest for finding out more. At the end of each block, participants will have written their own original song and recorded it with the help of professional music technicians. Find out more here.

Rainbow Connections Junior Choir – Their Junior and Youth Choirs perform challenging, fun repertoire. The choirs are now established as one of the UK’s leading groups. Their Multi Award Winning Junior & Youth Choirs are open to all. There is no audition required. Junior Choirs are for those up to school year 8 and Youth Choir is from Year 9 upwards – find out more here

Sharon Richards Singing School – With over 40 singers of all ages from 7 to 70, they enjoy performing at all kinds of events from “flashmob” surprises, to engagements, weddings. and general performances. Providing an eclectic mix of songs from musicals to Rock to up to date pop songs, they are a very lively and upbeat group and create an amazing atmosphere wherever they perform – find out more here

Bright Lights at Cast – Bright Lights is a completely FREE creative performing arts group for young people with additional needs aged 11 to 26 years. ​Each week young people can have fun, make friends and learn new skills in drama, singing, storytelling in a supported and friendly environment – find out more here 

If you’re a keen recording artist, looking for rehearsal space or want to develop your music technology skills, we’ve got some of the best recording studios in Yorkshire, and support for musical artists right in the heart of Doncaster:

Higher Rhythm, based on Nether Hall Road and at XP School offer music release, digital distribution, radio broadcast opportunities, live events, masterclasses and more. Higher Rhythm offer accredited courses including the HND in Music Technology and Sound Engineering (18+), BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Music Technology (16-18) and the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Creative Media Production (16-18).​ They also offer professional development, accredited music industry courses and hands on volunteering experiences in Music Technology / Music Industry / Radio Industries, alongside a regional Artist Development Programme, working with regional, national and international industry partners to provide maximum exposure for developing and emerging artists.​ Find out more here.
